Teacher Training

To become a teacher, you obviously need to undertake training to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but there are many different approaches to your initial teacher training. There are a few pre-requisites before you can undertake your initial training, and these include GCSE English, Maths and Science at A-C or the equivalent. For more details on this it is best to contact the institution about their entry requirements for initial teacher training. The first approach to teaching, if you wish to teach at Primary level, is to take an undergraduate degree in education. These are available up and down the country at many universities and colleges. UCAS should be your main source of information on this route. By carrying out your teacher training in this way you will undertake a three or four year degree that will offer QTS on its completion and will allow you to teach in primary schools in the UK.

Other routes into initial teacher training are aimed at a person who has already graduated from university with a relevant degree and are applicable to both primary and secondary teaching. One route is the more ‘academic’ route, by taking a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) where you spend approximately a quarter of your time at university and the rest on placement at local schools. This method is chosen by many graduates straight from university as it offers learning in very familiar surroundings. The others are Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) that offers ‘on the job’ training, providing you with an income as you study and the school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) that is supported by qualified teachers within a consortium of local schools.
