Revision for Parents
Parents sometimes feel a little helpless as their child goes through such an important part of their lives. Parents can play such a vital role during revision and examinations by supporting and encouraging their child through the exams. The importance of parents and supportive family members cannot be underestimates. During time of revision parents can help with a few simple things that will make the world of difference to their child’s revision and preparation. Never underestimate how important parents can be during revision.
Parents Tips 1 Make your home conducive to study. Your child will need a quiet space at home to revise in. Good light and air may seem unimportant, but these will help to keep your child focused. Keep outside distractions down, in particular other children, and make sure these know how important your child’s exams are.
Parents Tips 2 Provide energy for your child! Parents need to be a source of tasty but healthy foods that will keep them going through the revision and examinations period. Sugary foods and junk food should be avoided as they will cause fluctuations in blood sugar and will affect your child’s concentration massively.
Parents Tips 3 Breaks in revision are important too. Encourage your child to take regular short breaks throughout their revision, and make sure they have an evening or two off a week. They need to enjoy their hobbies too and breaks will help your child to relax more.
Parents Tips 4 Be actively involved in their revision. Make sure that they create a revision timetable (a template can be found here) that breaks down the time that they have until each exam. On the revision timetable your child should have each subject timetabled with each session broken down into different topics. Staying on track with the revision timetable will help your child progress at a steady rate and will help to sustain a good rate of revision.
Parents Tips 5 Help wherever you can during revision. Ask your child if you can help by testing them periodically or if it will help them if they explain certain topics to you. By discussing their revision with you your child will not only re-affirm their knowledge but also develop a confident approach to their subject. Talking to parents about revision can be a great confidence boaster!
Parents Tips 6 Make sure you know the exam timetables for your child’s exams. These can be found here on our ‘Exam Timetables’ section. By knowing this parents can help create a revision timetable and will be able to prepare your child the night before.
Parents Tips 7 Keep the school informed. If your child has a medical condition or the family is affected by a crisis or bereavement, make sure the school are aware. These factors may affect your child’s performance in exams. Many exam boards will take these factors into account if it is believed that they have influenced your child’s ability to take their exams.
Parents Tips 8 Be prepared. on the day of the exam make sure your child is fully prepared. Ensure that they have all of the necessary equipment (pens, pencils, ruler, rubber, pencil sharpener and calculator if necessary). It is also important to make sure they have a good, healthy breakfast that will provide them with energy for the exam. Don’t forget the words of encouragement too, and remind them that they can only do their best and that you are proud of them!
